Sod Laying Guide
Measure: The correct formula for measuring how many rolls needed for the job is (Length x Width) / 9.
Example: 10’ x 10’ = 100 100/9 = 12. 12 rolls would be needed
Soil Prep: Take off the top layer of vegetation to bare soil. Remove all rocks, clods, roots, and debris. If problem weeds are present, spray with Hi-Yield Super Killzall the week before soil prep. If heavy clay is present, soak with EnviroMax Soil Conditioner the week before laying the sod to soften up the soil. Rake and feather the outside soil edges down ½” to level the grade between the existing grass and the new sod. Rake the soil as smooth as possible.
Install Sod: Lay sod as soon as possible after picking it up. Sod that has yellowed from lack of sunlight DOES recover. Begin by laying sod along a straight edge. Alternate each row so the joints are staggered, like laying bricks. Sod on slopes should be contoured to avoid erosion. Roll or walk down the sod so that no air pockets occur.
Water: Start watering within 30 minutes after the sod has been laid. After sodding is complete, water again thoroughly to wet the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches. The Critical factor is to keep the soil moist until the fine roots can grow into the ground. During the first 10 days: Water new sod daily in cool weather, and 4-5 times a day for 15 minute intervals in hot weather. After 10 days: cut watering back to 2-4 times a week with longer 30-60 minute intervals.
Fertilize: One of the greatest tools for successful sodding is using the Miracle-Gro LiquaFeed Set. This allows feeding to the roots and watering at the same time! Large “Spring” sodded areas will benefit from an application of Dimension crabgrass pre-emergent. A soil pH test should be done to determine if lime should be used. Lime should be used 2 weeks before or after a fertilizer.
Mowing: New sod should be mowed frequently using the highest setting on the mower. Light, frequent mowings are beneficial; avoid scalping the lawn!
