Spring Grass Seeding
Grass seedlings need to establish before the heat of summer. Dormant seeding in late February-Early April is the ideal time. Having seed go through freeze/thaw cycles creates cracks in seed hulls. Because of the cracked hull, dormant seed germinates quickly once soil temperature is prime! Seeding varieties for this time of the year are limited to the cool season grasses, Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Fescue. Zoysia, Buffalo, Bermudagrass seeds are all warm season grasses and must be sown in June or July.
Kentucky Bluegrass is generally regarded as the most attractive cool season lawn available for the Kansas City climate. Bluegrass develops an attractive lawn in a unique way by forming rhizomes, or underground runners that spread new grass plants to thicken bare areas of lawn. Each Bluegrass plant forms many rhizomes to thicken the lawn, choking out weeds in the process. The more grass blades per square inch, the more attractive a lawn looks from afar. Bluegrass requires more irrigation & fertilizer to maintain good color, vigor, & health. Bluegrass will go dormant thru Kansas City's extreme summer heat & drought if not properly watered. (i.e. Higher maintenance achieves greater results) For these reasons, Fescue is the most recommended low maintenance grass type for Kansas City's harsh summer heat and droughts. New plant breeding has resulted in Fescue varieties which maintain darker green color, have increased disease resistance, form more grass blades per plant (Tillering), & the newly discovered Rhizome-forming Tall Fescues. Soil Service Garden Center stocks the newest, most highly rated grass seed varieties for Kansas City area lawns.
Soil Service Garden Center has a wide selection of grass seed varieties for all situations in the lawn. Have a shady area? 3rd Millenium Fescue grass seed is the top rated shade fescue available on the market. 3rd Millenium Fescue maintains good color & an increased amount of grass blades per plant, or Tillering, in shady areas where other Fescue varieties struggle. For hot, sunny areas, our Revolution Fescue Blend is the recommended choice. Fescues do not require as much water as Bluegrass or Ryegrass to remain vigorous & healthy. Fescue roots grow deeper into the ground, granting access to water reserves Bluegrass & Ryegrass cannot reach. Every spring & fall, our turf experts reformulate and upgrade our Revolution Fescue Blend, incorporating the newest generation of fescue seed technology available.
Soil Service Garden Center has also developed as a house blend the KC Marathon Fescue / Bluegrass Mix. KC Marathon Fescue / Bluegrass Mix is the most highly adapted seed mix for the Kansas City area. It can be used in full sun or shade! KC Marathon Fescue / Bluegrass Mix contains approximately 90% Fescue seed & 10% Bluegrass seed. The newest Rhizome-forming Tall Fescues varities are added to KC Marathon Fescue / Bluegrass Mix. Fescues naturally form a "clump", resulting in potential for bare spots for form between established fescue plant "clumps". Lawns that are sown with Rhizome-forming Tall Fescues varieties will not have this problem. Bluegrass naturally forms rhizomes to thicken & fill lawns quickly. The combination of Rhizome-forming Tall Fescues & Bluegrass rhizomes will insure an attractive, vigorous lawn for all sunny or shady lawn environments.
Soil Service Garden Center is continually upgrading their KC Marathon Fescue / Bluegrass Mix, Revolution Fescue Blend, Spring Up Bluegrass / Ryegrass Mix, Superblue Bluegrass Blend, & Shady Lawn Supreme Mix every spring & fall, to bring to their customer market the most highly rated grass types available on the market.
