2017 LAWN CARE PROGRAMS
Did you know that nationally advertised lawn programs seldom fit, in turf speak, our KC transition zone climate? For example, many national programs have a summer fertilizer treatment. This may be acceptable for upper Midwest and East Coast climates, but we are hotter and much more humid in KC. We have enough disease problems as it is and a summer nitrogen treatment can really get fungus going. Your Soil Service Garden Center solves this problem read more
WE MAKE LAWN CARE EASY
Your Soil Service Garden Center has offered lawn care programs since 1991! Being locally owned, we choose the best products for our area, like the high performing, proven Ferti-lome products.
When you are on our program, we’ll even warehouse the products and call you when it’s time for your next application. This means you treat your lawn when the grass needs it and not when lawn care companies get around to it.
You’ll be surprised how little time it takes to do it yourself, and the personal satisfaction and cost savings are highly rewarding. The first spring application begins soon so please see us ASAP to sign up for the program that best suits your lawn!
WEED CONTROL OPTIONS FOR 2017
Customers who have been on our program for several years may need to only spot spray for particularly troublesome broadleaf
weeds that granules do not control. Examples are wild violets, ground ivy and clover. If you just need to spot spray or simply want to use less overall weed control material, we will work with you to exchange the granules in the lawn program for a liquid spot treatment product at a Lawn Care Program Member discount.
TIME TO DORMANT SEED
If you have a bare area in the lawn that is begging for grass by this summer and sod is not an option, February-early March is a good time to try dormant seeding.
SEEDING TIPS FROM THE TURF PROS
Professional turfgrass growers routinely use special grass seed mulch products designed to reduce soil moisture losses and increase germination. But slopes present a problem when heavy rain washes away seed. SEED AIDE solves both of these issues. SEED AIDE has been used for decades in the professional turf grass industry and is unique because it has a “tackifier” that helps hold seed and mulch in place. Best of all, the cost per 1000 sq. ft. is the same as other seed mulches. It’s a win/win for you and your lawn!
FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL BIRD FEEDING MONTH
You’d be amazed at how entertaining it is to feed our avian friends. Natural bird food supplies start to run out in late winter which is why February is National Bird Feeding Month.
But, how many times have you thought “sure, but if I feed the birds, I also feed the (insert word of your choice) squirrels!”
WE HAVE BIRD FEEDERS SQUIRRELS HATE BUT YOU’LL LOVE!
One of our bird loving employees found a feeder that absolutely prevents squirrels from getting to the seed. He has had it for over 25 years and swears it still looks and works as good as new (see picture below). Here’s how this simple patented design works; when a squirrel jumps on the feeder, its weight closes the seed opening. It doesn’t take long for it to give up in frustration and find something else annoying to do. When it jumps off, the feeder springs back open. BUT YOUR SEED IS SAFE! We’ll say up front it isn’t the least expensive feeder on the market, but it’s built tough and powder coated for many, many years of happy birds and unhappy squirrels! See us soon for a demonstration and take one home now to help our birds!
